Well done to the Galway Senior hurlers on winning the National League final in Limerick today and especially our two representatives Niall Burke, who lined out full-forward and Gearoid McInerney who excelled at centre back. It was great to see so many people from our parish in the Gaelic Grounds to see our two hero's defeat the reigning All-Ireland champions!
A notably busy past week on the local juvenile GAA scene with much activity on the Oranmore/Maree scene. This past weekend saw the u14 feile football take place for the Oranmore/Maree lads in games in Mervue and Westside. In a very tough group our local lads were pipped in a playoff by Salthill/Knocknacarra after both topped the group with two wins and a draw.On friday night Oranmore/Maree defeated St James on a scoreline of 4-5 to 2-3,next up was a thrilling 1-5 to 1-5 draw with Salthill/Knocknacarra on saturday morning with the final game a 3-10 to 3-3 victory against a stubborn, determined St Michaels side.Heartbreak in the playoff loosing out 1-6 to 0-6.So close for the squad and management team with Charlie Burke in charge assisted by selectors Frank Grealish,Martin Horgan and Pierce Butler.
The u16 hurlers made it 4 out of 4 in the championship when they beat St Thomas on a 2-18 to 2-10 scoreline in a closer game than the scoreline suggests, next up Salthill/Knocknacarra.The u14 hurlers surprisingly went down narrowly while understrength to Carnmore after a good run of wins but will be expected to bounce back against Moycullen.
A 24 strong group of u11s travelled to Na Piarsaigh on Sunday last to play our hosts in over 2 hours in a series of well contested and entertaining hurling and football matches in very pleasant conditions. Thanks to Na Piarsaigh for their wonderful hospitality and everyone then travelled to see Galway succeed superbly in the National League final in the Limerick Gaelic Grounds with their older clubmen playing a significant role in victory.Well done to Pat Keane and Richard Burke for organising the trip.
Oranmore/Maree won the first round of the junior ‘B’ championship with a comprehensive victory over Moycullen on Sunday morning. The team was as follows;Kieran Hanniffy, Declan O’Dea, Seamus Furey, Niall Higgins, Shane Hynes, Gary Brennan, Liam Keavney, Kevin Burke 0-1, Liam Keane 1-2, S. Flanagan 1-2, Shane Geoghegan 1-0, Paul Stephens 0-8, Conor Hanniffy 0-4, Martin Keane 0-6, Shane Lyons 1-0.
