As you may be aware from the publicity last week, the emerging preferred route for the Athlone to Galway Cycleway has been selected. The route selected is the Red Route Option No. 5. This route starts in Athlone and goes around via Portuma and Gort. It comes in from Clarinbridge to Rinville Park and from there on to Oranmore and Galway City. The current plan for the route traverses the site for the Renville Sports and Community Grounds. A detailed map of the preferred route can be accessed on the following link: https://www.galwaytoathlonecycleway.com/.
Oranmore Maree GAA One Club/Renville Management Committee expressed support for this route in the recent consultation process and are delighted that this option has been selected. As it will provide a safe cycleway for much of our catchment area to get to the new Renville Sports and Community Grounds, it will tie in perfectly with our overall plans for development of this vital sports facility.
For information, please note that there are a number of steps before the cycleway becomes a reality – the following steps are highlighted on the Authority's website:
- 8/12/2021 – 31/01/2022 - 3rd Round of Consultations
- 2022 – Design and Engineering
- Q2, 2023 - Application to An Bord Pleanála
- Q4, 2023 - Decision by An Bord Pleanála
- 2024 - Construction of Greenway
Anyone that is interested can make a submission through their website on this exciting development for our community.
In the meantime, we would also like wish all our members and their families a Happy Xmas and New Year and thank you for your ongoing support of the Renville Project. In these difficult times for many people, we also remember those that have passed away this year.
