Mixed results in the first round of the adult Hurling Championship weekend.

On Thursday last our Junior A's were in Ardrahan on a cold and sometimes wet evening. The match started late, but Oranmore Maree started very well and lead by 2 points at halftime. A controversial and highly dubious red card reduced our lads to 14 men midway through the second half. The lads fought hard to the end but we ended on the wrong side of a 1-12 (15) to 2-14 (20) score line. Jake Keady lead the scoring with 4 points with strong showings from Brendan Commins, Ciaran Whelan and Cathal Sweeney.

On Monday our Junior C team were in Athenry for their first outing. Depleted in numbers through illness and injury the lads put up a valiant effort all round with Cyril Connole (21 again) doing a great job deputising as net minder, the lads had a tough day at the office and will hope for better fortunes next time out.

On Wednesday our U20s were in Tynagh Abbey Duniry. The last time these two team meet we were on the end of a heavy defeat. On a blustery evening the lads were very determined to put in a performance and they duly delivered. An early Ryan O’Donnell goal sent them on their way and they nerve looked back. Well up at half time and enjoying the help of the wind on the second half the lads put up a big score. Ryan O’Donnell and Anto Keady lead the line very well, the Burke brothers of Rory and Colm set the tempo around the middle and Gerry Carr and Thomas Blake were very strong locking down the middle of the defence. Very well done to all the lads but stiffer test to come.
